Three-quarters believe IHT is unfair

Research by Friends Provident claims that eight per cent of Britons think that IHT is a just tax.

The financial services group also stated that 45 per cent of people believe they may be forced to pay IHT on any inheritance from their parents, with a further 20 per cent anticipating paying the charge on what they might inherit from grandparents.

Christine Foyster, head of wealth management at Friends Provident, said: This is no longer a tax on the rich."

"Ordinary people are being caught unawares by the IHT trap, mainly because property price gains have so completely outstripped any increases in the inheritance tax threshold."

The group have advised consumers to make use of existing avenues to allow them to pass up to £3,000 a year onto their friends and family before they pass away.

In recent weeks both former government minister Stephen Byers and the Conservative opposition have argued against the fairness of IHT.
