Two-thirds of Britons do not think it is a priority to save money, according to new research.
A report by Nationwide Building Society claims that only a third of consumers think it is very important to put money away for the future.
The society's head of savings, Lee Raybould, said Britons are seemingly feeling the pinch in light of current economic circumstances.
He said it was "worrying" that Nationwide's research revealed a fifth of people never save money.
The report also suggests that almost half of respondents felt government policy discourages them to save money.
Mr Raybould said the government should inform consumers about schemes such as the child trust fund and ISAs.
These savings vehicles "have the potential to make a real difference to household wealth", he added.
Last month, a survey by insurance provider Gocompare.com found that six in ten UK consumers hope to save money on expenses in the next year, with nearly a fifth of those questioned planning to put money into ISAs or savings accounts.
