One in five British men 'would like to be gold-diggers'

As many as one in five British men admit that they would like the chance to have a rich partner and a luxurious lifestyle, according to a recent study.

Scottish Widows reports that the wives and girlfriends (Wags) phenomena in the UK could soon be overshadowed by men trying to find themselves a well-off woman.

According to the firm's own research, younger generations of British men are more likely to habour hopes of becoming a "gold-digger", while very few pension-age males would hope that their wife or girlfriend could provide for them.

The research also found that women are becoming increasingly keen to gain financial independence and to lead their own efforts in saving for retirement.

"Our research shows that the tide is turning with so many men willing to be financially dependant on their partner but it's good to see the surge in women taking responsibility for their own financial future," said Mike Hoban, customer and brand marketing director.

Earlier this week, HSBC reported that most British women are unaware that their husbands can contribute to a retirement saving fund on their behalf.
