People with dependent children are being hit hardest by increasing household bills, a survey released by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has stated.
Nearly 75 per cent of parents are spending more on supermarket shopping, petrol or diesel, gas and electricity. In comparison, 59 per cent of those without children are paying more on everyday costs.
People saving for children may be continuing to invest for their future, however. The survey found while eight per cent of British people have been able to put aside more than last year, 40 per cent are saving the same amount.
The building society's group product manager Gary Lacey said: "Our figures do reveal that families are being affected more than most by rising costs."
He added a family savings account could help parents afford holidays or Christmas presents or prepare them for a rainy day.
The study found 44 per cent of people are still taking a holiday this summer despite the credit crunch.
However, research released by LV= last week states 58 per cent of people are choosing the UK as a holiday destination this year.
