More than one-quarter of Brits - potentially including those saving for children - failed to put any money aside this year, new research shows.
According to Alliance & Leicester, 28 per cent of people in the UK have not saved at all in 2008 and half of them regret their actions.
The research also shows that 19 per cent of consumers are disappointed not to have saved as much as they intended.
Furthermore, 18 per cent said they have dipped into their savings this year to cover unexpected bills and other essentials.
Hetal Parmar, manager for savings at Alliance & Leicester, urged Brits to make saving their new year's resolution.
"Think of it as paying another bill by setting up a standing order from your current account to your savings account," he advised.
Research from Halifax shows that many people are still saving for children. The bank found that 31 per cent of people claim they or their relatives put money into children's savings accounts each year.
