Opposition to the child trust fund (CTF) scheme from the Liberal Democrats is unfounded and contrary to earlier statements from the party, an academic has claimed.
Writing in the journal of the Institute for Public Policy Research, Stuart White has argued that the Liberal Democrats have traditionally called for all citizens to have a stake in society and dismissed their opposition as one that is at odds with the party's own stance.
Mr White said: "The Liberal Democrats appear to be opposed, for no very good reason, to a policy that expresses their own values and historical commitments."
He added that the concept of ownership for all in society was in need of resurrection at a time of increasing disparity between the rich and poor with asset poverty being prevalent.
The Liberal Democrats have argued that the money spent by the government on the CTF scheme would be better invested in the reduction of class sizes.
