Govt 'not encouraging people to save'

Many consumers in the UK are under the impression that the government does not do enough to encourage them to save, new figures suggest.

Produced by Nationwide Building Society, the statistics - which may be of interest to those saving for their children - reveal that 41 per cent of people surveyed think the state discourages putting money aside, while only 19 per cent believe it promotes saving.

According to the financial services provider, the Labour administration could feel disappointed in the results, which come just six months after it introduced improvements to individual savings accounts.

"There has never been a more important time to save which is why we urge the industry and [the] government to work together to help educate people about the importance of building their own nest-egg, however large or small," stated Matthew Carter, director of savings at Nationwide.

Meanwhile, figures produced by Lloyds TSB Consumer Banking recently indicated that 37 per cent of consumers are depositing less in savings accounts than they were six months ago.
