Children have a positive attitude towards saving, it has been claimed, with nearly half setting aside some money each week.
A study from Halifax revealed that a quarter of children save over £5 a week, while 24 per cent put away less than that amount weekly.
Research also showed that 54 per cent of children invest their money in a building society or bank account, while 38 per cent keep their money in a wallet or purse and 35 per cent in a money box.
Mike Reginier, head of savings at Halifax, said: "It is great to see that children have a positive attitude towards saving and are starting to get into the savings habit at a very young age."
He added that it is "encouraging" that children seem to recognise the value in looking after their money.
In March, Birmingham Midshires commented that the recent Budget had encompassed "significant steps" being taken in forging a savings culture in the UK.
