Calls for more help to start kids saving

Children in the UK need more help in understanding financial matters and should be encouraged in their efforts to start saving, according to one expert.

Wendy van den Hende, chief executive of the Personal Finance Education Group, claims that while children are keen to learn about money, they are not being given the skills they need to get a grip on their finances at an early age.

"Our research has shown that children are in fact saving their money so we need to help build on these good behaviours and attitudes to keep them going," said Ms van den Hende.

"What is needed is more structure and a much more coherent programme which can then be moved on as they move from primary school in to secondary school."

Ms van den Hende's comments come soon after the government announced its plans to see child trust funds used as way of encouraging British schoolchildren to engage with financial matters.
