Brits 'struggling to save as costs rise'

Many people in the UK are seeing their efforts at saving for retirement hindered as their livings costs increase, according to new research.

Figures from the Post Office have shown that almost five million consumers around the country believe that the rises in living costs have left them unable to add to a savings account.

Additionally, many of those people who have been able to maintain their savings habits have increasingly been returning to their accounts to use the money they initially set aside.

"In times of economic uncertainty, it's more important than ever to try and put money away," said Richard Norman, director of savings at the Post Office.

"Our advice is try and keep saving regularly, even if it's just a small amount, and consider saving less frequently such as every other month."

A report from the Nationwide Building Society recently made clear the majority of people in the UK would like to be saving more money each month than they are currently able to.
