Britons 'failing to save'

Britons failed to save as much as they had planned during 2006 while many are planning on sorting out their finances during 2007.

Recently published research from Alliance & Leicester revealed that nearly a third of those surveyed had not saved any money during 2006, while 19 per cent of Britons had not saved as much as they had originally planned to.

Helen Palmer, head of current accounts at the building society, said: "Despite ambitious plans for the year ahead, unless people commit to saving a set amount on a monthly basis it highly unlikely that they will get round to saving any money at all."

She added that savers' returns can be maximised by setting up a monthly standing order depositing a fixed realistic amount into a high interest savings account.

Earlier this month, Halifax reported that 54 per cent of children save money in a building society or bank, while 25 per cent save over £5 a week.
