Advisers publish inheritance tax guide

A financial adviser has published a guide to inheritance tax (IHT) aimed at consumers to better organise their tax planning options.

Origen states that IHT is "no longer a tax on the rich" but also affects ordinary homeowners.

Included in the guide are ten suggestions for consumers, including advice to make use of available exemptions, consider the transferring of assets between married couples and civil partners and properly make use of reliefs.

Bob Perkins, technical manager at Origen, said: "IHT has often been described as a voluntary tax because with a bit of prior planning it is possible to reduce your exposure to it."

"It may not be possible to avoid the effect of the tax altogether, but appropriate planning can improve the position for your heirs."

AA Legal Services announced this week that they would become the first major non-legal brand in the UK to offer IHT planning services.
