'Thousands' sign petition against IHT

It has been reported that thousands of people have signed an e-petition launched last week by a daily newspaper protesting the inheritance tax (IHT) system.

The petition, available on the official Downing Street website, has been initiated by the Daily Express, which states that IHT is an immoral form of taxation that punishes hard work and saving, while also being a form of double taxation.

Alison Little, deputy political editor at the newspaper, wrote: "Thousands of people have logged on to register their views and reveal their anger at how Gordon Brown has sat back and allowed the tax to trap a growing number of ordinary families."

She added that the newspapers expected increasing numbers of citizens to sign the petition in the forthcoming days.

Last month, The Children's Mutual reported that four in ten UK households could be facing a 40 per cent IHT bill.

The company advised grandparents to give their grandchildren the maximum annual allowance of £3,000 each year, which can saved in an investment plan and away from the taxman.
